About

Rebecca May

Rebecca May is a Registered Psychotherapist (#18034). She completed her MA in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and earlier learned advanced training in systemic family therapy at the Institute of Family Practice in Australia. She works primarily with adults and couples, focusing on the unique emotional and relational transitions that emerge during midlife.

Supporting Midlife Transitions & Managing Chronic Stress

Rebecca’s work is shaped by a rich and varied professional background. Alongside psychotherapy, she has spent years as a business consultant and project manager, and has more than two decades of experience teaching Latin dance and Kids Hip Hop. She has also navigated changing countries, parenting and major career changes later in life- experiences that inform her ability to understand the pressure, overwhelm, and identity shifts many adults face.

Her clients often seek support with life changes such as:

  • Couples therapy
  • Becoming a parent
  • Career transitions
  • Relocation
  • Separation or dating after separation
  • Workplace stress
  • Grief and loss

Rebecca helps people recognize how long-term stress can accumulate and show up as anxiety, low mood, sleep issues, or constant mental overdrive. Her therapeutic approach focuses on slowing down, reconnecting with personal needs, and making choices aligned with one’s values and authentic self. Much like teaching dance, she believes that anyone, at any age, can learn practical steps toward healthier coping, improved resilience, and a more grounded way of living.

Couples & Relationship Therapy

Working with couples is a central passion in Rebecca’s practice. Married for over a decade and raising three young children, she understands the real-life strain that careers, parenting, and daily responsibilities can place on a partnership. Many couples arrive feeling disconnected, exhausted, or unsure how to repair the distance that has grown between them.

Rebecca has specialized training in the Gottman Method and uses this evidence-based approach to help partners:

  • Reduce conflict
  • Deepen emotional connection
  • Understand each other’s values and perspectives
  • Repair recurring communication breakdowns
  • Build or rebuild trust
  • Create shared meaning and long-term vision

She creates a warm, transparent, and encouraging space where couples can learn new relational skills and appreciate each other’s strengths. Rebecca believes that when both partners are committed to the process, even long-standing challenges can become opportunities to grow closer and create a relationship that feels like a steady place of support amid life’s stressors.

Personal Background & Interests

Originally from Australia, Rebecca moved to Canada in 2012 and still returns home when she can to reconnect with family and revisit the beaches she loved growing up. Outside her clinical work, she teaches Hip Hop to kids and Latin dance to adults. She also prioritizes time with her husband and their three young children, balancing family life with her creative and professional passions.
